A Night to Remember

from A$119.00

The earth was treated to a spectacular display of Aurora Australis on 20 Dec 2015. A few days beforehand, watching solar activity, I could see the signs were there for an epic display. Armed with camera and a sleeping bag I flew down to Tasmania with hope and doubt. Doubt because the heavy likelihood of cloud and a certain full moon not long after sunset would render it hidden, if in fact it would even show at all. Well, it arrived and with incredible luck, a cloud gap opened up just at the perfect moment. It all worked out, and it was one of the largest aurora displays seen in the last six years.

This is easily the best photographic night of my life; it could have easily been a waste of money and time, but it was a big risk that paid off.

I shot this at 16mm on a full-frame sensor, and to give you an indication of how incredibly large this display was, the beams were towering nearly directly overhead. It is a night I will never forget!
